The Unwelcome Visitor

A week ago, in the evening while we were listening to an audio book, this critter showed up in the greenhouse.  He was after the cat's food. We breathed a sign of relief when the fat old skunk tottered off, and quickly shut the cat door!
apparently the cats are too well fed...
checking for any dropped pieces
not a scrap left
goodbye, and good riddance!

The Hummingbird Family in Our Backyard

Early June I was eating watermelon in our back yard under the walnut tree.  A hummingbird began buzzing me, but that is not so unusual.  In my experience hummers are very curious and will come quite close if you sit still; I did have a piece of watermelon in my hand, and they are attracted to the color red.  So I was enjoying watching the little bird darting around me when suddenly my eyes focused on her nest!  Just about 8 feet from where I sat, on a low hanging branch.  This little mother is far too jittery for me to get a photo of her on the nest, but enjoy the baby hummingbirds!
For context, the nest is the size of a golf ball & the eggs, the size of navy beans.  And for interest, the main construction material is spider web!  Bits of other material are woven in, but it is the spider silk that gives the nest it's toughness and flexibility, allowing the nest to stretch to accommodate the growing babies.
